The benefit of this was that it did everything in one step (you didn’t have to input the payment on the bank website and then separately record that payment in Quicken). The latter, free bill pay is (to me) quite essential. It sounds like that was omitted in QEM, which is a dealbreaker for me. I switched some time ago to another product that offers online bill pay, investment account tracking, full reporting, etc. I doubt Intuit will win me back at this point.
We did not regularly balance the checkbook. Actually, that's an understatement. I usually had very little to do with it anyhow, but I can remember times when we would try to catch up on months of statements at a time. And one time it got so bad that we had to start a new account and let the old account die.
I'm pissed that I spent this money and basiclaly downgraded to something that is slowing me down now. I've been a Quicken user in Windows for over 20 years - read the reviews for the Mac version and thought, 'How bad can it really be?' Let me tell you.pretty.pretty.bad. I would be better served reconciling my accounts in the old-fashioned register using a pencil and eraser. I have no idea what my bank balance is right now and will do the thing I did in high school; no purchases for two weeks, get an accurate balance and start over. And I will truly start over on paper until I can find something that works OK on a Mac.
It does NOT even provide a way to reconcile your account assuming you can convert your old files. It is horrible! ***UPDATE - PLEASE READ*** ***july 8, 2013*** After converting my Quicken 2006 files successfully, and using Quicken Essentials for about a week, I tried opening QE and got an error message '1008_Description', and I could not open my accounts. Tech support indicated that I would have to manually restore my Quicken accounts from my bank.
I think the best way to address this issue is that there are different money management personalities out there. You would probably associate with “trackers” or “reconcilers” that like to double-check every statement. The Millennium generation is more likely to have only ever known online banking and the instant transactions with debit cards. Writing checks is almost completely foreign except for a few big items like the rent.

Mint.com does not have a check register although they told me they were looking into it when I wrote them. Not that I’m using a Mac for everything else, I don’t want to spend $60 or $70 for Quicken just to be a check register although converting all my old data is appealing. Is there a free program that is purely a check register and, if so, can old data be imported?
